Dear
all,
Some
of us predicted that our world as we know it would end on the 21st
December 2012. Little did everyone know then that the end was nearer, nastier
rather; that it’d take a girl to go through insane amount of pain, misery and
humiliation to get the status of ‘India’s brave daughter’. Named ‘Nirbhaya’, ‘Damini’, ‘Amanat’ and so
on, this girl and the way her life ended saddens the very thought of humanity.
There is absolutely NO way of justifying the heinous acts this unfortunate girl
became a victim of. More than the death of democracy, it’s the demise of
humanity - A trait becoming rarer and rarer in the human race.
The
best time of curbing the chauvinistic mentalities and the prevalent patriarchal
mindsets was ages ago. But the second best time is right here with us. NOW is
the time for us to get a control on our own lives. And it needs to be done by
teaching and correcting the men in our lives.
As
much as it may seem impossible, things go on. Another year is here. Newer year.
Hopefully, a better one. But we can’t
rely on our hopes, sit back with a bowl of popcorn's and take our eyes away from
reality. Shutting up every mouth which has the audacity to abuse womanhood,
fighting against every single soul which still believes in the notion of a ‘stronger
sex’ over a weaker one and demands a self-proclaimed superiority, making people
not just literate but educated, and ensuring the certainty (if not severity) of
punishment for all those who still oblige to their animalistic behavior and
commit such unforgivable crimes and on top of everything, implementing
everything on our own sons – if somehow, someday we are able to accomplish bits
of these, our hopes and hunger for a better society might really become a happy
reality.
Entering
the New Year with sadness in our hearts was never a choice. Yet, it is
inevitable at this point. Yet, hoping that the year turns out to be better,
that justice would embrace the unfortunate family, that we shall not stand any
such thing ever in our lives again, that the culprits remorse the limits of
inhumane behavior they reached, that our elected leaders act and react
sensitively and sensibly, that this JUST WOULDN’T HAPPEN AGAIN, that the girl
rests in peace wherever she is, that the family finds closure.
With
this, we wish everyone a better New Year 2013.
Stay
safe. Think before you act. And be good. That’s not too much asking, or is it?
New Year resolutions, anyone?
